Welcome to the Clinical Center

The Clinical Center at Southern Illinois University Carbondale has been part of the Southern Illinois community since 1958. The Clinical Center serves as a training and research site for various campus departments that train professionals for work in health-care and educational services. In that training and research capacity we provide a range of services designed to improve the lives of the individuals we serve. Our clients come from many walks of life. Some are associated with SIUC, many are not. The Clinical Center is located in the first floor, west wing of the Wham Education Building, Room 141. On the campus map you will find the Wham Building south of the green soccer field located in the north west corner off Lincoln Drive.

Do I have to be an SIU student to use the Clinical Center?.

No. The Clinical Center is open to the general public as well as to members of the SIUC community. We are committed to meeting the needs of our clients regardless of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or differential abilities.

Who provides services?

The majority of the services are provided by clinicians-in-training who are supervised by faculty or Clinical Center staff. Staff members and faculty also provide limited direct service. Your needs will be carefully reviewed and matched with an appropriate clinician to provide you with the best service possible.

Can I get help without anyone knowing?

We are committed to protecting and maintaining your confidentiality. No information about you or the service you receive will be released without your written permission unless it is required by law.

Does the Clinical Center charge fees?
Yes, the Clinical Center does charge fees. However, because of our educational and research missions, they are much lower than those charged by most other health-care practitioners. A sliding fee scale provides an additional reduction in fees for those with limited incomes. You can call or email (bgilbert@siu.edu) for more information about the cost of a particular service.

What services are available?

The Clinical Center provides evaluations and interventions for children and adults in these areas:

Evaluations/Assessments

Psychological evaluations including Attention Deficit Disorder Assessments
Learning difficulties (e.g., learning disabilities and attention difficulties)
Speech and language (e.g., articulation, phonological development, voice, stuttering, receptive and expressive language, auditory processing, aphasia, cognitive-linguistic, oral-motor, swallowing)
Audiology (e.g., acoustic reflex, audiometry, threshold, tympanometry, otoacoustic emissions, auditory processing, central auditory function)
Some court evaluations (e.g., determine value of therapy intervention)
Neuropsychological evaluations

Treatment/Training

Speech-language-hearing therapy (e.g., language, speech sound production, stuttering, speech reading, aphasia rehabilitation, and voice)
Individual, couple, and group counseling/therapy (including child, adolescent, and adult)
Family psychotherapy
Parent training

How can I get help?

The best ways to initiate services or to find out more about the services offered at the Clinical Center is to call the receptionist (618/453-2361) or come see us on campus. We ask that the person who will be receiving services make the request for services. In the case of a minor child, their parent or legal guardian needs to contact us. During this first contact we will ask you for some basic information (name, address, phone number, etc.). Depending on the services you are interested in you may be scheduled for a screening or intake interview.
